It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Tennessee State Museum and its Foundation. As the chairman of the Douglas Henry State Museum Commission, the museum's governing authority, I want to emphasize how seriously each and every one of the Commission's members take their duties in overseeing one of the oldest state museums in the nation. It is our intention to ensure that the Tennessee State Museum becomes an even more outstanding institution in the future.

With its extensive and storied history and its larger-than-life political figures, entertainers, writers, artists, sports stars, scientists and social activists, the Volunteer State has long been in the vanguard of the shaping of America. Imagine how different life in the United States might have been without David Crockett, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Andrew Johnson, Sam Houston, Admiral David Farragut, Sergeant Alvin C. York, W. C. Handy, Cordell Hull, Alex Haley, James Agee, Wilma Rudolph, Red Grooms, Morgan Freeman, Isaac Hayes, Chet Atkins, Minnie Pearl, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton, not to mention, Tennessee's most famous export, Elvis Presley. And, those individuals represent just a small slice of the fascinating people who have made Tennessee one of the most interesting states in the nation. Our history is a reflection of our country's history, and the Commission, Foundation Board, and staff at the Tennessee State Museum are working daily, not only to protect and preserve it for you and future generations, but to bring it to life, as well. Please consider supporting the museum's Foundation by joining online today---simply click here to become a museum Foundation member now.

We hope that you enjoy your virtual visit to the museum on our website and that you will take the opportunity to personally visit us in downtown Nashville sometime very soon.

Sincerely,

Thomas S. Smith
Chair, Douglas Henry State Museum Commission
