Windgate Internship

Windgate Museum Internship at the Tennessee State Museum
Quilt Cataloguing Internship

The Tennessee State Museum (TSM) has been awarded a prestigious Windgate Museum Student Internship grant for 2013 for quilt cataloguing. TSM’s more than 300 quilts are the state’s largest public collection. Through this funded opportunity to help with cataloguing recently acquired quilts, TSM would like to encourage the study of Tennessee quilts by the next generation of museum curators and scholars.

About the Museum:

The TSM is situated in the James K. Polk Cultural Center close to the Tennessee State Capitol in downtown Nashville. The museum’s more than 140,000 artifacts, about 5,000 of which are currently on exhibit, document the history, art, material culture, and natural history of Tennessee. These holdings are particularly rich in a full range of Tennessee craft arts, from pre-contact to the present. In addition to the permanent Tennessee timeline on display, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions both in Nashville and for travel to other institutions across Tennessee and beyond. TSM’s staff also serves as a specialized resource, advising the public and other collecting institutions about the preservation of their collections.

Job Description:

The intern reports to TSM’s Senior Curator of Fashion & Textiles and assists museum personnel in cataloguing, photographing, and storing about 100 quilts dating from the mid-19th century to the present. During this process, the intern will be specifically responsible for identifying patterns, textile types, and construction techniques in the quilts during cataloguing and will observe and learn national best practices in textile handling and storage, especially for quilts and other large textiles. The intern will also learn to enter cataloguing and other information into TSM’s collections database. Cataloguing and photography follow the parameters of the Tennessee Quilt Survey. Storage follows the standards and guidelines of TSM’s current Save America’s Treasures grant housing upgrade.
