Civil War Workshop

“What Is to Become of the People”
The Civil War and Reconstruction in Tennessee

A Professional Development Opportunity

Saturday, March 7, 9 to 3 p.m.
6 hrs. in-service credit

This March, the Tennessee State Museum will host an intriguing professional development opportunity for Tennessee teachers. Based off the newest exhibit, "What is to Become of the People" The Civil War and Reconstruction in Tennessee, this workshop will take a close look at the tumultuous years during and following the Civil War.

Because it reentered the Union so soon after the war, Tennessee’s Reconstruction experience was unique and like no other southern state.  Join us for this special day to gain a deeper understanding of this complicated and often misunderstood period in American history. Sessions will not only examine the historical content but also specifically target the new social studies content standards as well as provide teaching strategies to address the core curriculum.

Issues to be addressed:

  • Why Tennessee was such a divided state on secession?  (5.6, 8.74, 8.75)
  • The significance and outcomes of the battles at Franklin and Nashville. (5.11, 8.80)
  • African American involvement in the war — including the 13th USCT. (8.78)
  • Reconstruction and Andrew Johnson — including his impeachment, and the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. (5.17, 5.20, 5.22)
  • Why Reconstruction in Tennessee was so different. (5.23, 5.24, 5.26, 8.77, 8.86, 8.89, 8.90)
  • How to incorporate diversity in the study of this era.

Resources include:

  • Curator-led tour
  • Grade-level lesson ideas
  • Primary sources from the collection of the Tennessee State Museum
  • Informational texts
  • Scholarly advice on teaching this critical but often misunderstood era.
