The Life of a Civil War Soldier

Grades: 5-12

How hard is hard tack?  How much weight did a Civil War soldier have to carry when he marched? These are questions the history books don't address. However, the answers give us a sense of what the Civil War was like for the common soldier, the hardships he endured, the loneliness he must have felt, and the ever present fear of going into battle.

In this trunk, your students will touch, feel, and even smell things soldiers used every day. In this trunk, you will have the opportunity to  talk about hygiene during the war using a toothbrush and a comb (to talk about lice and the unsanitary conditions of camp life), or dice to talk about games they played. Using these items and more, your students will explore the hardships faced by the soldier. They will come away with a very real and personal understanding of the sacrifices faced during this pivotal moment in our state's and nation's history.

This is a great way to supplement your study of the Civil War using hands-on materials.

Trunk Highlights Include:

  • A Union sack coat
  • Brogans (shoes)
  • A haversack filled with the personal items of the soldier
  • A Civil War music CD
  • A real Civil War bullet
  • Hardtack
  • Photographs of Tennessee soldiers
